Mike Riggins is not only a Coach and Umpire-in-Chief at NVLL, he has also previously been our Head of Safety. He takes his role seriously, as well he should, because we take safety seriously at NVLL .
Mike put together a few tips - some are Little League mandates - for our Managers, Coaches and Parents to remember as we all put Safety First!
- The on-deck position is not permitted in Little League Major Division
and below. - The next batter should be ready with a helmet on but may not pick up a bat until it is his/her turn at bat.
- Batting donuts are not permitted.
- Managers or coaches are not allowed to warm up a pitcher at home plate, in the bull pen, or anywhere else at any time.
- Managers or coaches must not catch in any form of infield or outfield practice.
- Wearing of a catcher's helmet with mask and dangling throat guard (even if the mask has a wire extension) is required during games, pitcher warm-up, and any form of infield or outfield practice. The hockey-style helmet is authorized for use at all levels of play. The dangling throat guard still must be attached properly.
- During practice, especially at fields other than ours at NVLL, a manager, coach and/or parent should walk the field to ensure the field is free from harmful items.
Remember, SAFETY FIRST!
